How to make a Board Game?
First Step
For Board Games fans, it is quite physiological to arrive at a moment when one becomes eager to create a board game that fully reflects the tastes developed after years and years of "honored career" by the player. It thus moves from being a "common player" to "aspiring author" and, in the best of cases "author realized". So if you feel at that stage, you have come to the right page: we will publish on our blog all the basic steps to create a board game, divided into 5 "episodes". We will try to give you a very general overview of the creation process, without entering the details more "fussy" because in reality, it is a vast world and much more complex than what appears, but we will make sure to share with you all the essentials , with the addition of some advice that never hurts and the solutions proposed by us in Tambù!
THE SUNRISE OF THE "LIVING" IDEAS
Like any self-respecting project, the starting point is the purpose or, even better the idea, the idea "naked and raw" without any reference to the objectives and resources, but only to the "design of the mind" of something that it still does not exist. The next step is to elaborate the idea, and then put down a kind of conceptual map by putting the idea of starting at the center and from there connecting all the other connectable ideas. For example the basic idea could be "I would like to make a fantasy board game with the dwarves as protagonists", while the connectable ideas would be "the story takes place in the Middle Earth", "the dwarves must conquer the lost gold", "Will have to clash with goblins and terrifying orcs", "the help will come from a powerful witch", "to reach the finish will have to overcome 5 fights", "the outcome can be determined by fate" [....]. At each correlation you will have to match a dynamic of the game, an action mechanism, for example the witch's help could be playable through a special card, the outcome of the fate determined by the roll of the dice, overcoming the fights could provide the use of "Action" card and so on.
The theme that you will choose for your game, does not necessarily have to be "upsetting" or "ex novo", it is more than plausible to set the game in pre-existing contexts, the important thing is to introduce the "gem", the element that will distinguish the your board game from those on the market (do a good and healthy search!).
First, we mentioned some ideas about the dynamics of the game. Mind you, these are very important! They will serve you to build the logic that moves the game: the "laws of logic and mathematics" that act as "vital energy" of your Board Game. To build the operation of the game, it will be useful to answer the following "must": What is the end of the game? How many players do I want to involve? How many shifts are needed to reach the final goal? How many actions do each player take per turn? Is there an interaction between the players? How do you decide to declare the winner? Will the choices made by each player influence the actions of others? Players' actions can be changed by "randomness".
Tambù offers an exclusive program "Tambù Authors" through which it is possible to receive feedback and advice from the team as well as suggestions from the associated community. Suppose that there are clear settings and game modes, how to realize your project? Well of this we'll talk about it next time!
